What does Jesus expect of us? We all wonder that. We sense we better do what The Boss wants. What is it? Many people have made lots of money out of finding an answer. How-to books, books about how to run a congregation, and much more have been written about this. What does Jesus expect of us? . . .

“Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures unto eternal life.” Thus says Jesus to us in St. John 6. We do well to ponder these words a little now as we get ready to celebrate Labor Day. “Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures unto eternal life.” . . .

Fall is here now. Summer flew by. School’s been in session for over a month. Now The Church’s eyes turn toward Reformation Sunday, and we begin to think that the big 500th Anniversary is only a year away. Next year it will be 500 years since Dr. Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of All Saints Church (aka The Castle Church) in Wittenberg. . . .

Why did Jesus do miracles during His ministry? Why did He heal people? He wanted to show people that He is The Son of God. More than that, He wanted to show them that He has authority to forgive sins. . . .

Happy Thanksgiving! I don’t say that because tomorrow is Canadian Thanksgiving Day; though we do have Columbus Day tomorrow, so we could join our Canadian Lutheran brethren in our English District in giving God thanks for the harvest. But I say Happy Thanksgiving because today’s Gospel suggests it. We’ll hear this Gospel again on our Thanksgiving Day, and the point then will be that we ought never forget to thank God for all His blessings to us. . . .

Reformation Sunday is two weeks away. We’re starting to think about why we’re Lutherans, why we stand firm on The Bible, on Law and Gospel, why we study Luther’s Catechism and take it to heart. But we also think about all he endured for his confession. It’s a miracle he didn’t get killed for his faith. Many did, like Bohemia’s John Huss 100 years before or the two youths whose martyrdom in Brussels inspired him to write his first hymn, part of which appears as TLH 259, “Flung to the Heedless Winds.” But he did suffer much, whether exile in a mighty fortress or the vile tongues and pens of many throughout Europe. . . .

Jesus is Lord. Jesus is God. This is the central point of our Christian faith. This is our constant focus. It’s not about us. It’s about Jesus. It’s about how Jesus is FOR YOU! . . .

Next Sunday is Reformation Sunday. We’ll give God thanks for the work of The Blessed Reformer, Dr. Luther, which has produced fruit in our lives. For you have been taught by his Catechism to believe you are saved not by what you do, but by faith in Him Who died for you upon The Cross, Jesus Christ your Lord. It is with that faith, without trust in anything you do, that you will go down to your house today justified. . . .

Every day we pray: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” The story Jesus tells us today paints these words. Our Savior shows us how He wants us to act towards others when they do something bad to us: He wants us to forgive them. . . .
