The centurion’s child was sick to the point of death. So are you. You don’t look like it. You don’t feel like it. After all, you came to school today. So how are you sick to death? . . .

“When our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, ‘Repent,’ He meant that the whole life of believers should be repentance.” That’s how Dr. Luther started his 95 Theses 500 years ago. This is what The Reformation is all about. This is what your faith is all about. You are in need of repentance. What is repentance? It isn’t doing something to get God to be favorable towards you. It’s turning away from Satan to The Savior, from evil to good. . . .

Invocavit, March 5, 2017 - St. Matthew 4:1-11

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of The Most High shall abide under the shadow of The Almighty. I will say of The LORD, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God; in Him will I trust.” But Adam did not dwell in the secret place of The Most High. Lent is about repentance. We focus on our sins. We don’t do it to learn what sins we’re good at so we can practice them more, like a basketball team has to practice free throws. We do it so we’ll be sorry for them and desire to be better and even work to do better. . . .

Reminiscere, March 12, 2017 - St. Matthew 15:21-28

“Remember, O Lord, Thy tender mercies and Thy loving-kindnesses, for they have been ever of old. Let not mine enemies triumph over me. God of Israel, deliver us out of all our troubles.” But the Canaanite woman must have been wondering if God had lied. For here He was, God in the flesh, and He was utterly ignoring her. Was He really going to let Satan triumph over her and her daughter? Would The Servant of The LORD really let His ancient foe win this war? . . .

I love history. It was one of my favorite subjects in school. I love museums and places that demonstrate how things were in the old days. I especially love maps – they show how boundaries have changed, cities have grown, and people have migrated. History tells us how we’ve gotten to where we are. . . .
