What’s your favorite pastime? People argue whether America’s favorite pastime is football or baseball. The correct answer here in western PA seems to be: Steelers. Perhaps, since the Summer Olympics are underway, one could argue that’s our favorite pastime. A couple months ago Oakmont might have voted for the U.S. Open. But are any of them really our favorite pastime? . . .

“Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace good will toward men.” And ever since the holy angels sang those words, well-meaning people have been talking about peace on earth. What kind of peace? The peace that ends wars. After all, World War I was once called The War to End War, but it didn’t. Yet every year at Christmas people talk and sing about the peace Jesus gives as if it’s the end of wars and the beginning of utopia. . . .

So many questions, so few answers. That’s how it feels sometimes, Christians. We wonder, especially during this Trinity Season, how The Trinity works. We wonder why God let Adam sin, why He created Satan when He knew he would get us to sin, why He created us able to sin. We wonder why people reject Christ, why His flock seems so small, why our churches aren’t full. . . .

We’ve been on a trip. It took us 4½ hours to go down from Penn Hills to here. The way was easy and fast. We didn’t have any car trouble, and nothing kept us from our destination, other than getting bored of driving. Now we’re here, and you can’t wait for all the fun stuff that awaits. . . .

Camp Pioneer RLS High School Trip - Galatians 3:15-22

Law and Gospel. If you’ve been at Redeemer a while, chances are you’ve heard these words before: Law and Gospel. You can boil the whole Bible down to these two things: Law and Gospel. When I was a little younger than you, my pastor gave us an easy way to remember what these two things mean: “S.O.S.” It works well here at Camp Pioneer because Lake Erie is known for all its shipwrecks. What does a ship in danger do? It lets out one big “S.O.S.” “Save Our Ship.” What do the Law and Gospel S.O.S.’s stand for? The Law “Shows us Our Sins.” If we were a ship, that means our ship would definitely need saving. The Gospel “Shows us Our Savior.” . . .

I just moved. Moving isn’t fun. One of the least fun things is finding out that something you want to take with you doesn’t fit through the door. That happened with both tables we were going to take. We took the legs off one and ended up leaving the other behind. I wished our old apartment’s door was much wider. . . .

Camp Pioneer RLS High School Trip - I Thessalonians 3:9-13

We’ll be home by now tomorrow. Our trip is almost over. A new school year will really start for us in a couple days. How should we start this year? St. Paul gives us a guide. Give thanks for your classmates and your teachers. Love them. Don’t hate them. Don’t think bad things about them. Want the best for them and from them. Certainly that’s what the faculty wants for you. That’s what I want for you as your pastor. Love them. Be willing to help them however you can. . . .

It’s time to go home. The only thing keeping you from the vans is me and lunch. So what have you learned this week? I know you’d rather be here than at school. We all understand. But what have you learned? The most important thing you should learn at an Evangelical-Lutheran school is that you are a sinner saved by Jesus’ Blood. . . .

Everybody likes a good meal. We’re at a meal, a full meal, though it doesn’t look like it. Certainly a little wafer and a sip of wine do not a meal make. No one’s physical hunger or thirst could ever be fulfilled or quenched by such a thing. Nor would all these words you hear me speak, let alone all the words you speak, fill your belly. Yet God has invited you here to dine on Christ by means of His Word and Sacrament. . . .

You’ve been back in school over a week now. You’ve already figured out who your friends are and you’re spending time together. It depends on which grade you’re in, maybe if you’re a boy or girl, or even who your brother or sister is. But you know who your friends are. . . .
