Christ is coming. Who is He? Who is this Man that St. John was born to preach? Who is this Son of David Who sits on David’s throne? Who is this One Whom angels and Apostles serve? Who is He, and why do we prepare for His coming? . . .

In your classroom, what’s the #1 rule? Listen to your teacher! But that doesn’t mean you look like you’re listening when you aren’t. It means pay attention. Listen to learn. Ask questions if you don’t get it. Study both at home and at school. Why? Just so you’ll do good on a quiz or test? No! So you’ll learn things you need for life! . . .

Advent II, December 4, 2016 - St. Luke 21:25-36

“People of Zion, behold thy salvation cometh!” This was the call of the prophets. They were calling on a people weighed down by the cares and concerns of this life, by sin and death, to look up and see their Messiah coming to them, gentle and lowly, riding on a donkey, riding on in majesty, in lowly pomp riding on to die. . . .

Advent is a penitential season. There are plenty of distractions this time of year, so it’s easy to forget it, and it doesn’t quite look or sound like Lent, but it’s penitential none the less. That’s one of the reasons we don’t sing the Gloria in excelsis. We are focusing on the reason our Savior had to come, which makes the joy all the sweeter when we sing the Gloria again on the day it came down from heaven upon the lips of the holy angels. . . .

St. Paul is talking about living in this world as Christians. That’s something we ought to think about a lot. How should a Christian live? Should my faith make a difference in my life? Should I act like my sins are forgiven, or should I just do whatever I want whenever I want, not giving a second thought to anything? Should I live like I will live again, or live as if this life is all there is? . . .

Advent III, December 11, 2016 - St. Matthew 11:2-10

Rejoice! Christmas is getting closer. Yes, it’s still two weeks away, but a little joy breaks through today. That’s why we have the pink candle. In some churches rose-colored vestments are worn on this day instead of purple or blue. It represents the sorrows of the penitential season being lightened by the coming joy of the feast. But John certainly seems sorrowful today. He’s stuck in a dark, dank, infested jail cell dungeon under Herod’s palace beyond the Dead Sea. There’s nothing to rejoice about there. Shouldn’t Christ come to rescue him? Shouldn’t The One he preached save him in reward for what he did for Him? . . .

Wednesday, December 14, 2016 - Romans 1:16-25

This church year we celebrate the 500th Anniversary of The Evangelical-Lutheran Reformation. 500 years ago this coming October 31, Dr. Luther posted his 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg’s Castle Church. He was primarily concerned with the Roman Church’s practice of selling indulgences, something it still does today. Scripture does not command them. Instead, it says that all sins are already paid for, are already forgiven. There is no punishment needed for them anymore, because Christ has already paid for them completely with His Blood. So we need not pay for any part of our salvation with silver or gold or anything else. It is accomplished completely. . . .

We’re getting ready to celebrate Christmas. You have a program coming up, and only a couple more days of school after that. Then it will be time to party. Most importantly, it will be time to celebrate The Savior’s Birth. . . .

Advent IV, December 18, 2016 - St. John 1:19-28

Are we going backwards? Last Sunday John was in jail. The two Sundays before that we were in Holy Week hearing about the last things and joining Jerusalem’s loud cries of Hosanna! But no, we aren’t going backward, we’re just closing in on Christmas. The Liturgy is bringing us from this present time closer in to that most holy night in which Christ Our Lord was born. It’s like going down an escalator. . . .

Today people don’t think much about God. There’s a lack of reverence, a lack of caution and fear. You hear the way some people talk about Him, all sorts of ways, perhaps you’ve even done it yourself, so you know this is the case. For instance, we’re more likely to use a nickname for Him than to bow the head when His holy Name is mentioned. . . .
