“The Word of The LORD endures forever.” That Old Testament line is one of the hallmarks of The Evangelical-Lutheran Reformation. Dr. Luther made his preaching completely about God’s Word. He rejected and preached against the false doctrines and works-righteous practices that surrounded him. He preached Law and Gospel because he knew that was the only way to save souls. . . .

God’s ancient people Israel suffered much at the hands of wicked men. Too often it was because they weren’t acting like they were God’s people. They were stiff-necked people who always went after other gods and neglected the true God. So God would send a scourge. His goal was not to punish them. His goal was to call them back. They were to learn to turn to Him in every trouble and trust and believe in Him. . . .

The Church Year is coming to a close. In a month we will enter Advent and Christmas will be almost here. But for now we’re very much in fall. Leaves are changing color and falling, the sun is overtaken by both rainclouds and darkness, warm is giving way to cold, and it’s far too easy to feel blue. The year is coming to a close, and we’ll soon be ready for it to be gone too. . . .

In 1483, on this day, a young miner in the German town of Eisleben walked to the church. He was carrying his firstborn son. He was born that night. Now he was going to be baptized. The priest asked: “What is his name?” The reply was: “Martin.” The priest baptized him: “In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.” . . .

Young Luther felt a heavy burden, a burden of sin Staupitz didn’t think was real. It wasn’t that young Martin hadn’t sinned. It was that he was never sure if he’d confessed everything so he kept coming back ad nauseum. He was boring Staupitz and taking too much of his time. What was worse was that he was never believing what Staupitz told him about God’s love found in Christ. . . .

It’s not tax time now. That’s April 15. Most of us are used to having our taxes taken out of our paychecks. I might be one of the few who pays quarterly. We do know what it’s like to pay sales taxes, though that gets rolled up in a purchase price, and then there are fees. We owe government; we owe it a lot. We are Christians. We are not of this world, but we are in the world. . . .

When I was young, I didn’t like to write thank you notes. It just wasn’t important to me. I wasn’t as thankful as I should have been for the gift. I hadn’t learned to appreciate things, to be thankful for what my relatives had given me. I suppose I hadn’t learned to appreciate what God had given me either. . . .

Trinity Last, November 26, 2017 - St. Matthew 25:1-13

When will Jesus come? Some have made careers and church bodies out of setting a date. One church leader in the last week even said the end is near. Jesus says nobody knows – He will come like a thief in the night; if you don’t expect a thief, you surely won’t expect Him. Therefore our Lord says to us, “Get ready! I could come at any time. Be prepared.” . . .
