Passion History II (Gethsemane) - February 28, 2018

Spring seems to be springing already. It’s been warm and we’ve had rain, not snow. Flowers are starting to sprout, and we hope deer don’t eat them. You may soon start to think about planting your garden. What vegetables will you grow? Will you plant lots of flowers? When will the trees have their leaves? How early will things bloom? We love gardens. They catch our attention when we walk by them. We wonder what’s growing in them. We enjoy watching them change over the weeks, months, and years. It should not surprise us then that God loves gardens. He created a garden in Eden in the beginning and He began His Passion in Gethsemane’s garden. . . .

Lent III, March 4, 2018 - St. Luke 11:14-28

“Mine eyes are ever toward The LORD.” How’s your eyesight? Many of us wear glasses or contacts. Perhaps you’ve had laser surgery to see better. How well can you see without your glasses? Are you blessed with 20/20 vision? Today’s Introit asks us how our eyesight is. But Psalm 25 isn’t talking about our physical eyes. It’s talking about our eyes of faith. How is our spiritual eyesight? Is it curved in on your problems and desires, or is it focused and grounded on our Lord God? Is it focused on Him and His mercy, or is it focused on the net of sin and death? . . .

Passion History III (The Palace of the High Priest) - March 7, 2018

In Catechism Class, the children learn that Jesus holds 3 offices: Prophet, Priest, and King. He is our Prophet. He tells us the future – He tells us how the world will end and what the judgment will be. He also preaches to us so we will be on the good side of His judgment. He is King. He rules all things for us. He is working through everything to bring us to salvation and thwart the devil’s wicked plans. He is also our Priest. That is what Lent is about. Jesus is our Priest, the person Who makes sacrifices for us. He is not just any priest, but our High Priest. . . .

Lent IV, March 11, 2018 - St. John 6:1-15

Rejoice! That’s The Church’s message today. Lent is a time of sorrow over sins, of reflecting on the reasons our Lord suffered and died, of realizing it is my fault and salvation could not happen any other way. But today The Church wants us to lift up our heads to see Easter is coming soon. Joy follows sorrow. So rose roses are on The Altar, and in some churches the minister wears rose vestments today, like the rose candle on the Advent wreath for Advent 3. The Lord died, but then He rose again. Rejoice! . . .

Passion History IV (The Praetorium) - March 14, 2018

Jesus is our Prophet, Priest, and King. Last week we heard Jesus is our Priest, our High Priest. He made a great sacrifice on Calvary. He sacrificed Himself on The Altar called The Cross. He gave up His life so we could live forever. He bore our sins so we could be without sin. He crushed the devil’s power so we could live under Him forever. . . .

Saturday after Lent IV, March 17, 2018 - St. Mark 14:1-31

When we hear the Passion History in church on Wednesdays in Lent, it always starts with Jesus going to the Upper Room to celebrate the final Passover. But that’s not where the Church historically starts the reading. The old practice is to read Matthew on Palm Sunday, Mark on Holy Tuesday, Luke on Holy Wednesday, and John on Good Friday. The readings from the Synoptics all start, not with the Upper Room, but with Judas’ plot to kill Jesus and Mary anointing Him. . . .

It’s party day. People are celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with parades, alcohol, all sorts of fun and games. It’s practically Irish Independence Day. Faces are painted green, corned beef is devoured, and everybody pretends to be Irish. . . .

“The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” Telling the truth is good. It keeps us out of trouble in preschool, and at home and at work too. It shows people can trust us to do the right thing and that we care about what’s right. It shows we are sorry when we do wrong and we desire to do better next time. Sometimes telling the truth can be the difference between life and death. . . .

Passion History V (Calvary) - March 21, 2018

Jesus is our King. He’s in charge of the world. He’s making it revolve and rotate. He’s not an absent deity who just watches the globe go round. He’s very much involved with what happens. He’s making history go, always working to get His Gospel through the ears of people into their hearts. He’s caring for us, protecting us, holding the devil at bay. He has judged us innocent of sin by judging Himself guilty of it, and then He declared it all forgiven. . . .

Palm Sunday, March 25, 2018 - St. Matthew 21:1-9

This day was 34 years in the making. 34 years before the angel Gabriel from heaven came to Mary and told her she would conceive in her womb The Son of The Most High. Today, March 25, 9 months to Christmas, is the day The Church remembers His Conception. We call it His Incarnation, His coming into, His taking on, our human flesh. We call March 25 Annunciation, because Gabriel announced Jesus’ Birth to Mary today. . . .
