SPELLING
FIRST THROUGH THIRD GRADES
Spelling is explores every day in the classroom as students are encouraged to
write throughout studies of all subjects and to sound out words as they come
into contact with them. Recognizing what sounds each consonant makes at the
beginning and ending of words is the base for beginning spellers. First grade
will then learn the sounds of the short vowels. Long vowel sounds are explored
next. Consonant combination such as th, wh, dr, fr, tr, fl, pl, and sl are each
separately studied. Children are assessed through their ability to understand
what each word means, how the words are use, and by weekly spelling tests. In the third grade spelling curriculum,
students will learn to spell words by grouping according to letter groups and
sounds. They will regularly practice dictionary and proofreading skills.
Students will learn and test weekly from individualized word lists.
FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADES
Our students will learn how to spell using phonics techniques and spelling
patterns in conjunction with the Look/Say, Picture, Study, Write, and Check
word study method. Some phonics patterns which will be studied include short
and long vowel sounds, clusters, digraphs, diphthongs, and consonant blends.
Students will also study compound words, plurals, homophones, homographs, and
contractions. Emphasis will be placed on learning word spelling skills, as
opposed to rote memorization of list words.
SIXTH THROUGH EIGHTH GRADES
Our students will learn how to spell using phonics techniques and spelling patterns
in conjunction with the Look/Say, Picture, Study, Write, and Check word study
method. Some phonics patterns which will be studied include short and long
vowel sounds, clusters, digraphs, diphthongs, and consonant blends. Students
will also study compound words, plurals, homophones, homographs, and
contractions. In addition, the students will learn how to spell the names of
all 50 states. Emphasis will be placed on learning word spelling skills, as
opposed to rote memorization of list words.
