Return to Core Curriculum

Participation in choir and program presentations will be part of the class requirements.  Redeemer has made instrumental music available for students in the elementary grades.  Lessons are available from a private instructor at the expense of the parents, during school hours.  Every effort will be made to have a minimal amount of disruption to regular classroom studies.

PRESCHOOL

We surround the children with music. It is integrated into the overall learning experiences of each day for enjoyment and communication. Music is used for getting acquainted, transitions, giving directions, quieting groups, developing cognitive skills, gross motor development, developing listening skills and auditory perception, and most important, praising God. Activities include singing, rhythmic activities, musical games, playing rhythm instruments, creative movement, action songs, and finger plays.

ENRICHMENT

Children will be introduced to many musical experiences. Songs of praise, songs for enjoyment, and fun, echo and response songs, simple rhythm games and movement to music will be included. Children will also be introduced to rhythm instruments. Listening skills, following directions and auditory discrimination skills will be enhanced.

KINDERGARTEN – FIFTH GRADES

Children will also be introduced to rhythm instruments. Listening skills, following directions and auditory discrimination skills will be enhanced.  The music curriculum utilizes hymns, folk songs, and spirituals of the church to teach the elements of music. Students will gain experience with the elements of melody and harmony. Students will be able to recognize and reproduce rhythms. Various aspects of form in music will be studied. Students will identify tonal quality in instruments and voices. Students will learn to recognize elements of expression including dynamics, tempo and articulation. An appreciation if famous composers and their works will be nurtured within the students.

SIXTH - EIGHTH GRADES
Various studies for general music include composers from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, a unit on jazz, a musical theatre unit, and a Christian artist discovery project.  Students are required to perform group and individual research as well as deliver several presentations.  Two school musicals will be memorized and performed each year.  In the instrumental section of the class, students will learn and review basic music theory and learn to identify and play I, IV, and V chords on the keyboard.  The students will then use that information to create their own compositions using the computer program ‘Finale Notepad.’  Students will recognize the four instrument families and study how each instrument is played.
