When I was little, I liked to watch superhero shows. I loved the old Batman series, the Spiderman cartoon, and **Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. I didn’t pay attention to the comics, but I liked the TV shows.
If you had to compare Jesus to any of those guys (Batman, Spiderman, Superman), who would you compare Him to? I choose Superman. He’s impervious. He has no pain. Only Kryptonite can take him out.
We often think of Jesus that way. I’m not sure that’s correct. Hebrews tells us Jesus was like us in every way, except without sin. That means He got sick sometimes, bit His tongue, got scrapes and bruises like we do. I don’t think He broke any bones though.
Today we see He was like us in every way. He was fully human. He saw The Cross coming and was dreading it. He felt our sins pressing down on Him and it hurt. He wondered if there was some other way to save us, but He knew there wasn’t. Don’t think He went to His Cross mad. He 100% wanted to save you by His Death.
Jesus is true Man. He had to be. Only a human could pay for our sins. He is also true God. Only God is holy, and only a sinless one could do it, and only God is strong enough to do it. So Jesus Christ, The God-Man, died for you to save you.
So how should you respond? Believe it. Trust Him to save you. Give Him thanks for it. Thank Him that He has saved you from both the punishment you deserve for sin and from the need to sin. So, like He says to the disciples, “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
