An angel deceived the virgin. Eve heard the serpent’s words and believed. She rejected God’s Word and desired to know evil. So she with her husband ate the fruit, and she gave birth to death.

An angel spoke truth to The Virgin. Mary heard Gabriel’s words and believed. She trusted God’s Word and desired to know good. So she handed herself over to God’s will, and she gave birth to life.

She was afraid when the angel came. Wouldn’t you? You’re a sinner. Sin must shrink back when confronted by the holy. You know, she knew, we all know deep down that what is wicked must be consumed and destroyed by what is good, that what is evil must be burned away.

Yet the angel says to you “Fear not.” We give birth to children who are sinful at birth, sinful from the time mothers conceive them. The Child conceived by Mary is conceived and born without sin. This Child is conceived to rescue us from sin, to purify us, to cleanse us from our sinful conception, to rule and shepherd us in what is good all the days of our life.

He did this by dying for us. This Child, this spotless, sinless, Lamb of God, was punished for all your sins upon The Cross. So when He rose, the angel said again to the disciples, “Fear not.” God and sinners are reconciled. For The Child Mary bore died and rose to forgive your sins, to bring you to the glory of His Resurrection. “Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will toward men!”
